You can love your body and want to change it at the same time

Warning. Rant ahead.

I don’t know about you, but my social media feed is starting to fill with the following messages..

* 95% of all weight loss attempts fail

* Dieting makes you fatter

* Stop trying to lose weight because it will never work

Whoa, really??

Lets take a step back.

For a long time there was a feeling in society that a woman “had” to look a certain way.

You had to look like a Hollywood movie star or the latest super model maybe.

A cookie cutter version of the perfect women.

That sucked.

This attitude is slowly changing and I think its great.

People and in particularly women are being celebrated at all shapes and sizes = Fantastic

Being happy with yourself and loving your body = YES

Taking the focus of looks and focusing more on what’s inside = Wonderful

Acknowledging that people can be happy and healthy in a wide range of shapes and size = Absolutely !!

BUT, in some circles I believe the pendulum has swung too far the other way.

I am currently seeing messages that seem to me like they are shaming anyone who wants to lose weight or change their appearance in any way.

**Maybe this is just in my world, not yours. Let me know.

Some of  these messages seem to imply the following…

“Loving your body means you should NOT attempt to change it… ever”

Any attempt at weight loss will fail, so don’t even try.

All attempts at weight loss are disordered and will result in you becoming fatter and unhealthier.

I agree that there are a LOT of terrible ways someone could go about changing the shape of their body.

And yes, if you choose a weight loss method that cannot be sustained long term, it will fail.

After all, you only get the benefits whilst you are performing the actions. Kind of like showering daily to stay clean. The job is never “done”.

However, there are also healthy ways to lose weight and change your body shape that will result in you feeling better, healthier, more energetic.

If someone wants to lose some excess body fat or change their body shape,

its no ones business except their own.

Fat shaming = NOT OK
Shaming someone for wanting to change = NOT OK

You can love your body now AND want to make changes to it. What a concept !!

Just because something is hard and a lot of people don’t succeed doesn’t mean its impossible or that no one should ever give it a go.

If that were true, I should have never started my own coaching business. After all, most small businesses fail within the first 5 years.

By all means I hope that no one feels like they have to be smaller, or change their size to fit in with societies standards.

But if someone chooses to lose weight or change the shape of their body, they have every right to do so.

I don’t know about you, but I get my hair coloured, have my nails done and like to wear lipstick sometimes. Not because I don’t love myself just as I am. Simply because I like to play with my look.

Sometimes I take healthy action steps to make me look leaner too.

Sometimes I don’t.

If you would like to lose weight, improve your fitness and / or increase your energy, I would love to help you do that in the healthiest, most sustainable way possible.

I don’t believe in fad diets, extreme measures, excessive exercise or living off lettuce leaves.
