Lesson 4 – My Thoughts On The Scales

My thoughts on the scales

During this program I want you to weigh yourself first thing every Tuesday morning, then check in with your results on the Facebook page

The scales give us a rough guide as to our progress, however please know that they don’t tell 100% of the story. It is for that reason that I want you to take your waist measurement now and then repeat every 2 – 4 weeks as well as doing your weekly weigh in.

—————–

When you weigh yourself using scales, you are weighing your body fat, your water levels, any food that might still be in your stomach, your muscles, bones, organs, hair, clothes etc.  Because of all these variables it is not useful to put too much importance into the actual number.
However, what might be useful to you is watching the changes in your weight over an extended period of time. (Assuming all variables remain the same).

E.g. weighing yourself weekly and comparing the number each week over an 8 week period.

Below are some important points to consider.

The general goal when trying to get in shape is to lose some body fat and add some Lean Muscle Mass (LMM). Up to approx. 4 – 5 kg’s of Lean Muscle Mass would be more than adequate for most.

——————-

As a general rule, if you have less than 5kg’s of body fat to lose, the tape measure will probably be your best measuring tool, NOT the scales.

E.g. If you put on 4kgs of Lean Muscle and lose 4kgs of body fat – the scales won’t move, however your body composition and your appearance will have altered quite dramatically.

A good guide is that for every cm your waist goes down – you have lost 1kg of body fat.

——————-

Some people have an un-healthy relationship with the scales. If you find that weekly weighing is hindering your progress, rather than helping it, then scales will NOT be your best measuring option. Tape measure, the mirror and your clothes are best for you.
