Ok, I need to get this off my chest
I would like to officially apologise for being such a judgemental bitch.
Something came up in conversation the other day that took me back in time. Waaaay back to my 20’s when I was a new and inexperienced trainer. I have come a long way since then. It got me to thinking about all the ways I used to be such a self righteous little B.
I am sorry for the things that the 25 yr old me said or thought..
(I am sure I will add to it over time)
On seeing someone going for a relaxed walk in the park…
25 yr old Chriss thinks..
C’mon, go harder. You are not achieving anything with that intensity.
45 yr old Chriss says
Hi, what a beautiful day. (As I am also on my relaxed stroll)

On seeing someone wear make up, matching earrings, hair done etc. to the gym
25 yr old Chriss
You can’t do a serious workout looking like that?
45 yr old Chriss
I love that wearing make up and doing your hair makes you feel good about yourself.

On seeing someone go for a long run at a medium steady pace
25 yr old Chriss
High Intensity Interval Training is better for results. Also you should be doing something that overloads all of your muscle groups. Stop doing your workout and do this “better” workout instead.
45 yr old Chriss
Its awesome that you exercise in a way that you enjoy and that works for you

On seeing someone chatting and socialising throughout a class
25 yr old Chriss
Go to a cafe if you want to chat!! You should be working so hard that you can’t say a whole sentence.
45 yr old Chriss
How good is it that you get to smile, giggle, chat and socialise? Exercise is hard enough, lets add some play-fullness.

On seeing someone eat 2 or 3 meals per day
25 yr old Chriss
You should be eating 5 – 6 small meals to boost your metabolism
45 yr old Chriss
Eat when you are hungry, stop when you are satisfied. It makes zero difference to your metabolism.
** Seriously, this is the one I feel the worst about. I told my clients to eat by the clock and I am pretty sure it did more harm than good. BIG apologies for this one.

On seeing someone come into the gym with no plan to improve and progress each session
25 yr old Chriss
How will you know if its working? Don’t you want to record and measure your results??
45 yr old Chriss
I understand that this is your time to turn your brain off. Its great that you are here to move your body.

You trained yesterday and you don’t feel any muscle soreness today ??
25 yr old Chriss
Well obviously you didn’t train hard enough! All workouts should be to failure and result in DOMS the next day. (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness)
45 yr old Chriss
Not everyone has the same goals or reason to workout. Do what makes you feel good.

As previously mentioned, I am pretty sure I will add to this list over time. I am sure I will remember more things that I would like to apologise for. That’s the beauty of growing, learning and improving.
