Body fat. The what, why and how (to lose it)

Did you know…

Body fat is simply a place where the human body stores excess calories so that you can use them later in time of famine.  Its a perfect reserve energy system that has kept us alive for…… well forever.

body fat store excess calories

Imagine your body fat is a fluffy doona covering your body. The level of thickness can vary.

This layer of body fat covers the harder (and separate) area of muscles under the skin.

The layer of fat is made up of calories that you consumed but did not burn at some point in your past.

These excess calories were converted into body fat so that you can use them at some point in the future when you might consume less calories than you burn.

The only way you can lose body fat (reduce the thickness of the doona cover) is to now use up more calories than you consume, or consume less than you use, depending on how you want to think about it.

The technical term for this is creating a calorie deficit.

You can do this by creating a small calorie deficit each day (traditional dieting).

Or by eating regularly on 5 days of your week and creating a large calorie deficit on 2 days of your week (5:2 fasting)

Or any combination in between.
