Lessons I learnt from my 10yr old daughter

My 10 year old daughter Holly is just starting to get the hang of money.

When we went to Bali recently, she was given $170 to spend over the 10 days that we were there.

The first few days she bought lots of things.
I reminded her that her money had to last her the whole holiday.

She told me “But Mum, its only $5 here and $10 there,  I’ve got so much money”

On about day 4, she added up what she had spent and how much money she had left.

She was shocked at how quickly it all added up.

The same can definitely be said when you are budgeting your food intake.
You might tell yourself, ” its just a little treat”, or “its only a little bit extra”.But those little things can add up pretty quickly over the week.

I am not telling you this so that you never have a treat again.
If you are smart, you can budget treats and extra’s in without too much trouble.

We could all learn something from my daughter. She worked out how to budget pretty quickly. She purchased all the things she really wanted in Bali. Including a wooden Buddha statue (for good luck), cute outfits and a toy furry orang-utan. She even came home with change !! (I don’t know how she got so smart) 🙂

We all know, that if you don’t keep an eye on your budget, things can quickly get out of hand.

PS – I am writing this reminder to MYSELF today.
